Biography
Hugh Culver, MBA
An inspired speaker with passion
Hugh Culver is the kind of person who certainly understands the incredible power of being passionate and inspired about your work. After 15 years as a professional whitewater guide and manager of the largest adventure travel company in Western Canada, Hugh turned his interests to pioneering and marketing adventure tours to the South Pole, mountain climbing expeditions, and even 'golfing' at the North Pole.
Within three years, Hugh created a company with sales of over $5 million and a staff of 35 with three offices. In that time, he sold close to $10 million in adventure programs and had created the only private base camp in Antarctica as well as the first private airline in that region.
Hugh also has lived his passions as an athlete! He has:
- competed twice in the Canadian Ironman Triathlon,
- run nine marathons,
- ranked 6th as a Canadian National Whitewater Kayaker,
- run the fastest time for the Chilcoot Trail (8 hours),
- ridden solo on his mountain bike from Cape Town to Durban,
- been a demonstration Telemark skier and instructor.
And, to quite literally "top it off", Hugh reached the summit of Mt. Logan (Canada's highest peak) in 1991.
As President and owner of Marathon Communications Inc., one of five successful companies, Hugh's vision is ...
... Changing the way work serves people!

Give Me A Break (NEW!) - keynote
The art of making time work for you
We are working in a time of distraction – endless emails, back-to-back meetings, interruptions, and growing work demands are taking their toll. People are constantly rushing, multi-tasking, bringing work home, and struggling to find time for themselves and their family.
Based on Hugh Culver’s new book, Give Me a Break, this exciting keynote is an essential message for anyone who has a To-Do list that never seems to end and is tired of always being busy. With his unique, high-energy approach, and proven insights, Hugh will show your audience how they can move away from always running late, and move instead towards more productivity, better health, improved relationships, and – yes – even greater happiness.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE SMALL STUFF - keynote
How to create excellence in every day
We can easily blame the world for our unhappiness: our workload, our boss, our clients, or even our lack of sleep! Yet our blame distracts us from the real source of our success—what we think about and what we do.
It’s all about the Small Stuff – Hugh’s most popular keynote – is packed with practical advice, often-hilarious stories, and completely relevant lessons on how small stuff, done well, and done consistently will always lead to huge success.
Hugh will teach you how to shift from thinking like a victim to acting like the master of your results. You will learn the secret of reframing and switching your thinking (and results) in just one minute, and why you need to master the art of asking. This dynamic keynote experience is the perfect kick-start to your agenda, or thought-proving wrap-up experience. Either way, your delegates will be talking about it for months.
RECLAIMING THE CLOCK - workshop
Getting more of the right stuff done
It’s easy to get busy – email, interruptions, meetings, and clutter can keep us busy, distracted from what’s really important, and discouraged. Without an intervention, “busy” becomes the excuse for ongoing missed deadlines, procrastination, needless rushing, and mistakes.
ReClaiming the Clock is an exciting new approach to getting beyond survival and excelling at getting the right stuff done. This proven model will show you how to free-up time for planning, improving systems, reconnecting with staff, and creative thinking. And for many graduates they also create exciting improvements in their use of personal time for family, relaxation, exercise, and fun!
ReClaiming the Clock is a proven formula for moving from chaos to clarity and from overload to on target with what matters the most to you.
FACING THE TIGER - workshop
Turning conflict into opportunities
Conflict in relationships is inevitable – broken promises, personality clashes, insensitive comments, and errors in non-verbal communication all can lead to a breakdown. This may actually be a good thing!
Facing the Tiger is a remarkable (even simple) program that empowers people to use a productive feedback model to use conflict to actually strengthen a relationship! Beginning with a better understanding of Pinches (the source of all conflict) you will learn a powerful way to formulate your feedback to gain a win/win solution.
The goal is healthy conversations and helping people to get back to work without the distraction of roaming office ‘tigers’. Facing the Tiger will start you on a new, more confident path with the skills and awareness to success.
This is a pragmatic, proven program – In a Canada-wide study, 92% of all graduates successfully addressed a workplace conflict issue within the first 30 days after their course!
THE LEADERSHIP TOOLBOX - workshop
Engaging others to lead
Great leaders are not born – they have mastered their craft with specific skills and a consistent attitude of collaboration that allows them to accomplish great things with people. Leaders that practice these skills are able to bring the best out of people and achieve massive results by allowing staff to be motivated.
The Leadership Toolbox is an ideal seminar for any leader with direct reports who values results and wants to know how to engage people and get the work done. This content-rich, interactive program is packed full of relevant, street-ready skills and practices that can be applied immediately.
Based on the concepts of Intrinsic Motivation, Leadership Leverage, and the Coaching Leader, The Leadership Toolbox uses a holistic approach to motivate followers to be leaders.
